VoIP Telephones and Products For Business
By Alexis Svenn

Voice over IP Telephony is revolutionizing the way in which office communications take place. Originally all telephone calls worldwide, mobile or landline were routed through what is called the PSTN or Public Switched Telephone Network - the mobile system is configured via GSM traditionally whereas the landline system runs through an international legacy copper wire cabling network. The PSTN is defined as :

A domestic telecommunications network usually accessed by telephones, key telephone systems, private branch exchange trunks, and data arrangements. Note: Completion of the circuit between the call originator and call receiver in a PSTN requires network signaling in the form of dial pulses or multifrequency tones.

A giant leap from this traditional communications loop has been IP telephony - variously referred to as , Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone and most commonly perhaps, VoIP Telephony. The idea originated in the early seventies when the idea of Protocol for Packet Network Interconnection was first put forward by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Since then, of course, the world has seen massive advances in speed of data transfer and an almost 100percent penetration of broadband into homes and businesses in the present day.

This availability of high speed data transfer has made the possibility of SIP and VoIP protocols being integrated in to both home and office environments.

Initially the uptake was slow. Skype brought the concept to the masses in their homes and can be seen to have, single handedly, changed the conception of VoIP phone calls. People around the world realised that they could enjoy high quality phone calls for free utilising only their broadband connection.

For businesses the issue was slightly more complex. There is the issue of the high bandwidth that voice packets take up and the fact also that for a professional organisation it is imperative to have high quality and stable lines of communication.

These issues have, to a large extent, been resolved, with modern VoIP installations requiring a dedicated broadband line and improvements in SIP protocols.

Nowadays it is an extremely viable alternative for a company to migrate their VoIP Telephone System from the PSTN and have either a hosted IP platform - whereby there is a virtual VoIP Telephone System or have their own IP PABX System. One of the benefits of this migration to VoIP is the scalability and usability of the new systems - it is extremely easy to add new extensions and routing loops to a VoIP Telephone System without additional cost. Therefore, although a company will have an initial capital outlay in purchasing the new system and hardware, there are massive saving in total cost of ownership as a system will generally pay for itself in call and management savings within a few years.

Once you have installed you VoIP system and configured all the extensions and routing channels there is the necessity to consider the most suitable hardware for the environment. We researched some alternatives and found that Best4IP have a vast range of VoIP Phones available which include IP Conferencing Phones, IP System Phones and IP headsets for use with either direct through the Internet or via a VoIP/ SIPP switchboard.

This new communications network, though in its infancy, is already extremely sophisticated - we can only wait to see what the future holds.

Alexis Svenn is interested in many things he finds online and in his pockets and is fascinated by recent developments in VoIP telephony.

VoIP - Beyond Voices
By Leonel Dunn

VoIP Termination has become a globally famous technology today. It has crossed boundaries of age, profession and culture and its appeal is not anywhere near waning. The children with their voice games, adults and their online socials, corporate executives conducting a one-on-one conference with a provincial manager, overseas-working mothers trying to connect with their children and practically anyone who has found home in this revolutionary technology is just thankful they did.

Because of its growing popularity, VoIP service providers offer competitive rates, thus making the market highly volatile. The good news is, there is a wide variety of options for those who wish to take advantage of benefits of this relatively new technology. If you’re one of them, don’t just jump into the bandwagon. There are some key points you need to consider before taking the plunge.

First off, it’s wise to choose the provider that offers you the most affordable rates. But while this aspect is important, there are more things to your VoIP that can define its performance such as network stability. Voice quality is another side to VoIP that you must ensure you get a good return on. Whether you need a VoIP service for personal or business reasons, it’s important to consider leasing a network that furnishes you with regular reports bearing details on the durations of the calls you’ve made. This is a basic aspect that every VoIP service provider must deliver well and one that you are better off being particular about. It’s also highly beneficial if you’re a businessman who needs the edge of an organized approach to your affairs. Furthermore, a good telecom network should provide you with a wholesale and reseller panel to equip you with vital capabilities such as customer call flow control and monitoring of time consumed. Both ways and more, you are provided an efficient way of keeping a constant eye on your business.

Still, that’s not all you need from a telecom network providing your VoIP. The pillar of any performing service provider is a technical team that is adequately trained and capable of providing 24-hour quality support to its clients. While traditional modes of communication are still being used, some providers have a unique 24/7 email or chat support service. All in all, a network’s technical support team will prove to be its backbone which not even the most high-technology equipment in the world can do without.

Current trends are now leading towards globalization and whether we find ourselves in the business sector or in our own personal niche, we do get a lot of promise from present technologies we have around such as VoIP call termination.

With just a toll free number and a telecom service subscription, the benefits of VoIP call termination are ours for the taking.

A touch screen laptop is your inner artist’s best friend since the childhood days of the etch-and-sketch or magnetic drawing board. If you have the inclination to watch your creation develop through the point of a pen or pencil, today’s touch screen laptop is both an effective work tool as well as an outlet for your creative expressions. Many people already have laptops that don’t have such a sophisticated technology. Maybe we bought our computers a few years back and many of us don’t always reach for the top of the line nor did many of us even know such a feature existed. Whatever the case, if you have a laptop and would like some of the conveniences of a tablet PC, all you need is to add the touch screen feature which is now an available option for approximately $130 thanks to the TabletLaptop by NAVIsis.

The device is very much plug and play with most of the common household Windows operating systems. It works with Windows 2000, XP, XP-Tablet, and Windows Vista. The minimum CPU requirement is Pentium 500MHz or equivalent which I can’t imagine anyone using anything less than that, although I should be careful not everyone is as fortunate to be addicted to the latest greatest technological gadgets we don’t really need, but I digress. The input is a standard USB 1.1 and you will need an optical disk drive for the CD.

In applications such as Microsoft Outlook, you can compose and send handwritten emails; which is very personal, not to mention cool. That’s really all you need to turn your regular laptop into a touch screen computer with all the standard features of a touch screen laptop tablet. You can use your fingers or the included stylus to resize and flip through images, dynamically manage and control presentations and documentation without a mouse.

The few downsides are that while they’ve tried to compact it as much as possible, and the website claims it’s a compact size and design, any addon to a laptop just defeats the purpose of being portable and convenient, which no laptop really is. Also, true touch screen laptop models have swivel screens that can be folded flat against the backside while your ordinary laptop cannot. Being able to fold flat makes the writing and drawing much more sensible as opposed to a screen that is rather inflexible to the contours of your pen grip.

Touch Screen Laptop Guide is your informative guide to touch screen laptop computers. Whether you are new to the market, or the laptop is, our goal is to bring the most informative or useful touch screen laptop news and reviews.

Convenience of Communication For the Commuter
By Paul Mcindoe

Until the recent and widespread introduction of mobile broadband, the internet could only be accessed by most businesses via the workplace. But, with many businesses required spending their hours of the day on the move, demand for a more mobile internet has transformed the long and frustrating commute into a more productive journey.

In fact, the ability to access the internet at any time of day and from anywhere has made mobile broadband an increasingly attractive proposition, for both commuters and businesses alike.

The relatively new and developing technology behind mobile broadband enables a dedicated device to scan local 2G and 3G (high speed) networks - much the same as a mobile phone does - to establish the best available internet connection. This will typically involve the insertion of a USB modem or data card into a laptop to establish a wireless connection and a high speed internet connection.

Of course, connection speeds and services are improving, but they can still be temperamental in certain areas or situations. For instance, it is fair to say that high speed internet access from mobile broadband is not yet a viable option for users in rural areas, as 3G networks are limited to larger towns and cities. What’s more, those who are travelling by train may often lose connections when going through tunnels.

However, enhancements to network coverage and availability are continually being made both over-ground and underground. A prime example of this being within underground stations is in the city of Glasgow, which have become Wi-Fi enabled allowing mobile broadband commuters to connect to the internet at any underground station within the city.

In addition, such improvements to broadband accessibility in recent times have seen its popularity for business use significantly increase. And subscriptions for mobile broadband are often much like home or work broadband packages, offering monthly subscription costs depending on usage, download speed and length of contract.

In fact, as services and devices develop, and as demand drives increased competition, mobile broadband could well be the dominant broadband platform of the future; removing any requirement for a static work broadband connection.

In the fast paced world of broadband technology, it is clear to see that mobile broadband is not only a major advance in internet browsing; but, possessing the capability to access the internet from any location and at any time is likely to transform the way many businesses operate.

Computer Virus, Anti Virus, and Virus Removal
By Alan Hohenbrink

Due to many requests I will discuss virus removal. This is of great importance these days as newer and nastier viruses are being released all the time. The best offense is a good defense so it is imperative to haveanti virus protection. If it is too late to protect and you already have a virus read on.

As I said, the best offense is a good defense. Of all the software you buy the one you should not skimp on is an anti virus program. I have heard several stories recently of people paying $350.00 to have a virus removed and the operating system reinstalled. This really doesn’t make any sense because installing an operating system requires formatting, (erasing), the hard drive which would eliminate any viruses contained on it anyway. Protect yourself first and avoid being put in that position. Once you are infected you must act quickly. Delay will just allow it to change more of your system settings. If the virus gets into the root of your system it can be very difficult to remove. This is called a root kit virus and they attach themselves to necessary system files. With that being said I suggest that you proceed with caution because deleting the wrong files can cause great damage to your system, sometimes so bad you are unable to boot up at all. Here are links to two free root kit anti virus programs. The first is from Sophos. I haven’t used it yet myself but they do have good reviews. Just go to sophos.com and look for the free scanner.

The second is from AVG and I have used this one. It is fast, thorough, and free. To get this free program do a search for “rootkit virus removal free AVG” with a space between each word. Before you use a root kit anti virus it is imperative that you disable ALL real time scanners from your anti virus, spyware, and adware removers as well as your firewall as these will produce false positives. Use extreme caution when you choose to delete anything a root kit anti virus finds. If you are unsure about what to do go online and do a search for virus index, or virus definitions. Noy only will you find out if the file you have is a virus, you may find virus specific removal instructions…..

Before you begin scanning for spyware follow this tip. Use a cleaning program to clear out junk files and temp files first. It will cut down on the scan time for your anti virus. Don’t forget to purge your temporary internet files and cookies too. You also need to make sure your programs have the latest updates.

Here is what I do when I am presented with an infected computer. I will run two anti virus programs, one at a time. I will scan two or three times with one until it doesn’t detect anything anymore, then I will uninstall it including the virus vault. Then I install a different anti virus and run it several times, the choice of programs is up to you. Here are two other options for you. Get Microsofts free malicious software removal tool from this link. http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx I also run Spybot and Adaware afterwards just to make sure I got everything. Spybot is for spyware but it definitely will find a virus too. Once you think you have found everything I suggest making sure. There are a few sites that offer online scans. The only one I have used before is Kaspersky and it is free and thorough. You just go to the site and let it scan. At the end you will get a report that shows any malware left on your system. Just do a search for their site and specify “free scan”.

After removing any viruses from your computer it is always a good idea to clean it up. Use your cleaning utility to clean the system and registry. After that run your defragmenting program. You will also need to,(VERY IMPORTANT!), empty your programs virus vault. If you have a program that can wipe the files do it. You should now be at a nice clean system state. This is the perfect time to set a restore point and use your backup program to create a new backup. You do have a backup program don’t you?

I have been repairing computers for years and one thing I have found is that most repairs would be unnecessary if they had been maintained properly. I write articles for the average experienced user to enable them to perform maintenance and avoid high priced repair shops. My website provides software assistance, tips, and has an archive with all my prior articles. Alan Hohenbrink
